Throughout the years since its establishment, the E3 Expo has been a venue for many game developers to show-off their upcoming game and game-related hardware. Through the E3 Expo, thousands of professional and avid gamers are able to experience the future of interactive entertainment. History of E3

E3 begun with its creation in 1995 and has continued through the latest expo in 2011. From 1995 to 2006, the conference was known as the Electronic Entertainment Expo. For a brief time in 2007-2008, the conference was known as the E3 Media and Business Summit but was reverted back to Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2009.

Before the introduction of E3, most game developers showcase their products and hardware to other trade shows like the Consumer Electronics Show and the European Computer Trade Show. The idea of the first E3 was conceived by IDG’s Infotainment World and Interactive Digital Software Association (now known as Entertainment Software Association).

The first E3 in 1995 coincided with the start of new generation of consoles. The first E3 featured the start of Sony’s entrance to the video game industry with their new Sony Playstation console. Sega Saturn, capitalizing on its head start on the gaming industry with Nintendo, used the event to unveil its Virtual Boy system. SNK Playmore Corporation has also participated with the release of their Neo-Geo CD. The E3 Expo has also showcased several video games for both Playstation and Sega Saturn. Some of the games that were shown and garnered attention were Battle Arena Toshinden, Ridge Racer, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter, and D. Despite being on its first year of demonstration, the E3 expo proved to be the premier event for gaming in the United States.

Throughout the succeeding years, the event continued to grow and became a common place for unveiling of new products. E3 was able to featured the release of new game consoles like the Sega’s Nintendo 64 (1996), Dreamcast (1999), Playstation 2 (2000), Nintendo GameCube (2001) and Xbox (2000), Playstation Portable (2004) and Nintendo DS (2004), Xbox360 (2005), and Playstation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii (2006).

In the year 2005, the E3 convention was first aired on television. From then on, all future E3 conventions were slated to air on G4 networks. It was also during this year that the 11th annual E3 summit was able to attract around 70,000 attendees. But despite recent successes in the years 2005 and 2006, E3 has announced that the following conferences would be downsized and restructured due to the overwhelming demand from the exhibitors.

On October 13, 2006, E3 has released a detailed new format of the show. E3 was originally envisioned as an expo open only to game industry professionals. Throughout the years, E3 expo has been populated by a great number of bloggers and attendees who were not perceive to be industry professionals. Through the revised format, these persons were excluded from the event and transformed the E3 conference as an invitation only event.

From 2007-2008, participants of E3 expo has been greatly reduced to 10,000 by 2007 and 5,000 by 2008. A separate conference called the Entertainment for All Expo has been held during these years to accommodate the public demand for a major, annual video game event; but this didn’t duplicate E3′s previous success and was later abandoned. During these years, the E3 expo has been criticized by both from within and outside the gaming industry; speculating that these changes have excluded, and even damaged, independent developers in favor of larger game companies.

By 2009, Electronic Entertainment Expos has decided to revert back to its original format before the 2007 restructuring. During this year the show was greatly expanded in terms of its size compared to its previous years. The conference has been reopened to all qualified computer and gaming audience, which was greatly appreciated and well received by game makers after a disappointing performance by E3 2007 and 2008. E3 2009 and 2010 has both shown high attendance figure.

You’ll cherish the photographs of your child helping the magician and the children will be thrilled by the experience.

Only book a birthday magic show if you have at least 45 minutes of time for the show and a quiet, well-lit environment free from distraction. If the show is to be held outside, be sure to provide seating in the shade.

I have been in the entertainment industry for over 31 years, and acting as CEO of an entertainment agency since the year 2000, and what I read astonished even myself. My aim in this article to deal primarily with the first site I mentioned although I will not reveal its name.

The person advertising the site made it appear that anyone can run a successful agency, and that you really don’t need any skill, and that you can use it to make lots of money. These are the main points of the sales pitch that I wish to comment on.

Firstly not everyone can run a successful entertainment agency, it is more than just finding a few acts to add to your books and then selling their services. To be successful requires building relationships with acts, clients and venues; it requires building trust and that can only happen with time. A successful agency needs a good variety of acts to offer, as each clients needs are different, and each event is bespoke, no two are the same. Experience is the key; knowledge of the industry a must, being able to offer advice that is competent to clients and acts is paramount. You cannot sell something about which you have little or no knowledge.

A good entertainment agent is a skilled individual, the same as an electrician or builder. The main skill is how to tell a good act or service from a bad one, how to get them to want you to represent them. An agent also needs to understand the best way to market a particular act, what events they are suitable for, which clients would be interested in them, you don’t try and market a rock band to the cabaret club on a cruise ship full of pensioners and you wouldn’t suggest a blue comedian to supply family entertainment at a holiday centre. Agents have to be skilled in separating the wheat from the chaff, they have to be good at promotion, and they have to be sales people. Trust me it is harder to sell a service than it is a product.

The third point was that it is easy money, which is a big no. Most people looking for entertainment will try many sources and often more than one agent, so you are competing with others in the industry, others with experience. Lets say that in a week a new agency gets 25 enquiries, which is an over estimate, but makes the figures easier (I am allowing an approximate 10% conversion rate from enquiry to sale). Perhaps 3 of those enquiries translate into bookings at lets say £200 per act per booking that makes a total of £600 the acts will earn, that is not the agencies money the agencies money comes via commission. Now lets say the agency charges a commission of the average 15% that equals a commission made of £90.00. Now subtract from that overheads, telephone, postage, printing, software, advertising and also time spent working on winning those 3 out of 25 enquiries, also take into account the cost spent on the enquiries that did not convert, you will probably find that after everything those 3 acts have made you a total of £50.00 after expenses. Now comes the next bit of bad news, you cannot claim any commission until after the act has done the job and been paid by the client, if one of those bookings is 6 months away then you have to wait. There is also the matter of taxation and in the UK national insurance contributions, which takes a little more from the profits.

An agent also needs to know the law in the country in which they operate, and to comply with it. But that could make god knows how many more articles in it’s own right. The other thing to bear in mind if you operate in the UK is that it is illegal to charge an act a fee for registering with you, I cannot comment on if this is the case in other countries.

To clarify what I have written, entertainment agencies are not a get rich quick scheme, the good ones are managed and run by dedicated individuals who put in long hours, people who have worked hard within the industry to build themselves up to where they are now, it did not happen overnight. There is no such thing as easy money we all work for what we get nothing comes for free. It is drive and determination and a unique skill set that separates the top agencies from the rest and to get the quality acts on your books means knowing your industry.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time reading tax cases to find one where meals and entertainment expenses were disallowed specifically because of improper documentation.

*Here are a few examples from recent cases:

The taxpayer’s business meal expenses did not satisfy the substantiation requirements because they did not include the taxpayer’s relationship to the parties involved or specify the business purposes of the meals.

The taxpayer’s meals and entertainment deductions were disallowed because the taxpayer couldn’t provide anything to tie the deductions to specific copies of receipts, checks, or other documents. Plus, in the few records the taxpayer did provide, there were duplications and other irregularities in the records making them unreliable altogether.

A spreadsheet listing the numbers the taxpayer put on his return was insufficient to substantiate or use to reconstruct business expenses for meals and entertainment.

This means that even if a meal or entertainment expense is perfectly legitimate, it can be disallowed if the documentation is not proper!

How to Protect Your Meals and Entertainment Expenses:

In my teachings, I dedicate an entire session to Travel, Meals and Entertainment. One of the strategies I share is how to use the IRS rules to make money on your meals and entertainment by turning your current non-deductible expenses into legal tax deductions. One of the key parts to making this strategy work is protecting your meals and entertainment deductions by keeping proper documentation.

Use this short checklist for all of your meals and entertainment expenses and your deductions will be well protected:

____ Amount of each separate expense

____ Date of expense

____ Location of expense

____ Business purpose of expense

____ Names and business relationship of the people involved

It may seem like quite a bit for each and every meal and entertainment expense, but here are a few ways to make this process very simple:

Get a receipt! The first 3 items – amount, date and location – are usually printed on the receipt. Then simply write the remaining 2 items – business purpose, names and business relationship on the receipt.

I always recommend scanning your receipts so you have an electronic copy. Many receipts tend to fade in just a year so your documentation could disappear! A scanned copy won’t fade and can help reduce the clutter of receipts.

If you don’t get a receipt, then document all of the items listed above (either write them down or type them up) and then attach support for the payment. Here are a few examples:

If you paid by check, attach a copy of the check and your bank statement showing it cleared your bank account.

If you paid by debit or credit card, attach a copy of your bank or credit card statement showing the debit or charge.

If you paid by cash, try your best to get a receipt! Otherwise, make sure your documentation is precise and make sure a very small percentage of your expenses fall into this category of paid by cash and no receipt.

**Important Tip!

Don’t force it! If a meal or entertainment expense doesn’t meet the business purpose requirement because it was a personal expense, then don’t deduct it. If the IRS finds personal expenses being deducted, then all of your other expenses will be heavily scrutinized, putting your legitimate deductions at risk for the slightest reason.

The type of presentation that a company chooses to receive from a corporate entertainer will depend on the business that is hosting the meeting and the atmosphere within the corporation. A company with a strictly conventional office environment might select a motivational speaker whose presentation is formal and straight-forward. Musical bands are a common choice, either during or after a dinner, but there are numerous other types of presentations and business entertainers to consider when planning a meeting or event.
